Don Rutledge was an internationally renowned photographer from the 1960's until his retirement in 1996. He is best known as the sole photographer for the John Howard Griffin novel "Black Like Me", which is now included among classic non-segregationist literature in the Smithsonian Library. The later part of his career was dedicated to capturing the mission field for the Home Mission Board, International Mission Board, the Associated Press, and the Southern Baptist Convention. He is said to have brought the mission's ministry into the homes of many Americans by showing "quiet moments of humanity" through his photographs. His photos have been featured in LIFE, LOOK Magazine, and the Paris Match.
Don is the great-uncle of Steph Hall. He is the primary inspiration to her as a photographer and artist. After seeing the impact he had through photography, her vision became to strive to capture people, moments, and places in the same transformative manner he did over the course of his 35+ year career.
